How BCAR DATA started
We’ve spent years tracking residential construction and renovation trends across the country’s most active metropolitan markets. In that work, we kept coming back to the same observation: the data that tells you exactly where construction is happening — building permits — is publicly available, but almost no one in the trades is using it.
Contractors were spending money on ads, leads services, and word of mouth — while a free, highly reliable signal was sitting in city records every single month. We decided to do something about it.
BCAR DATA was built to bridge that gap — to take the raw permit data, clean it, and deliver it directly to the people who can use it most: the plumbers, electricians, HVAC contractors, flooring pros, and other trade professionals who build and maintain our cities every day.

How we source our data
All permit data is sourced directly from official city building and safety departments. Building permits are public record — filed by property owners and developers as part of the city approval process. BCAR DATA accesses this information through official channels, compiles it, removes errors and duplicates, and delivers it in a clean, ready-to-use Excel or CSV format.
